Why build a web site?: When you run an ad in a newspaper, magazine or through
direct mail it will be seen by thousands of eyeballs. However most of them are
not looking for your particular product or service at that time. People find
your web site through a search engine only because they are specifically
looking for your product or service. Less eyeballs to be sure, but this is very
targeted marketing. People come to your web site only if they are interested in
your product or service. Web hosting costs an average of $25.00 a month. You
won't find a more effective way of advertising for that price.
Content:
People use the web because it contains
more information than they can find in a phone book or other advertisement.
This is the information age and people want to research products and services
before they make that first phone call. If you want your web site to get a good
response you need to provide people with the information they are looking for.
You can be sure people are also looking at your competitions web site. If your
site lacks the information people are looking for they will just click on to
another web site.
Design:
Your front page needs to make a good
impression or people will not click through for more information. They will hit
the back button and try another web site. A graphically appealing front page
and a short paragraph about the products or services you provide will bring
higher click through rates. A poorly designed page gives people the impression
you are a small and unprofessional company. That is one of the great advantages
of the Internet. Even a small company can look like a million bucks.
Professional design makes your company look good and will increase the response
you get.
Cost: Good design doesn't have to cost a fortune. People come
to your site for information, not to be entertained. You do not need fancy
flash animations, complicated scripts or music. In fact these cute things can
slow your page loading and drive your customers away. Designers love to make
complicated time consuming pages and do things that have never been done
before. This impresses other designers but does little to impress the people
who visit your page. I have learned that most customers want to keep costs down

Promotion:
Your pages will be meta tagged for top
search engine placement and hand submitted to the top search engines and local
directories. Many web design companies do not provide this service, so be sure
to ask. What good is a web site if it can't be found? You need to add your web
address to all your current advertising, business cards, letterheads and email
signature.
Browser Compatibility:
Be sure your site works in Internet
Explorer and Netscape. For most business sites the majority of your traffic
will come from a Yahoo directory listing. It now costs $299.00 for Yahoo to
look at your site and consider listing it. If your site does not work in
Netscape they can reject your listing and keep your money. Make sure your site
is ready before it is submitted. If you are rejected you will have one chance
and 30 days to fix the problems.
File Formats: Files can be accepted and provided on Iomega Zip Disk
and CD-ROM as well as email and FTP. If images need to be worked on before
posting, they should be scanned at 300 dpi and saved as an uncompressed tiff
file. Files should not be compressed until they are ready for the web. Cyber
Ink Design can scan your files for you. A good image starts with a good quality
scan.
