Houston Texas Animal Shelters & Rescues

Alaskan Malamutes PhotoMany dog pounds, shelters and animal rescue groups now have photos online of their adoptable pets. This is how I found my two clowns. I decided I wanted older dogs rather than puppies this time and I have to say they have both turned out to be great dogs. People have asked me what was wrong with my dogs that someone got rid of them. NOTHING was wrong with the dogs, the people just decided they didn't want them. Many people decide that a pet is too much trouble and that is why the pounds, shelters and rescues are full of homeless animals.

Many of the shelters have pics of their animals on petfinder.com Just enter your zip code and the type of animal you are looking for. A long list of homeless pets from various shelters will be displayed.

Petharbor.com will show you a list and pictures of adoptable and stray dogs from area dog pounds. If you have lost a pet you need to check this site daily. Pounds are only required to keep strays 3 days before they euthanize them.

If you take a stray dog to the ASPCA they will send it to the pound to be euthanized. They only keep pets (owner turn ins) that don't have health problems. If you try to take a stray to a rescue group or shelter you will probably find that most don't have any room. Most groups will help with finances if you agree to foster the dog through their program. Both my dogs were taken from death row by rescue groups and stayed with foster parents until I adopted them.
