I ordered the
large Extreme Outback Log Cabin from SitStay for Munchie. I wanted a flat roof
wooden dog house so Munchie could get up on top. As you can see she thinks this is a
pretty good idea. The roof does have a slight slope to the back so the water
will run off but is not so steep that a dog can't lay down on top. The wood is
fir which is durable yet lightweight so assembly is easy. The roof is the
heaviest part and I can still easily move it by myself. The offset door will
help protect your dog from the elements. The raised slatted floor will keep
ground water out and let dirt & water fall through from the inside. The
shipping weight on the large model is 70lbs.
Assembly is
simple. Just bolt the 4 sides together, screw on the plastic feet, drop in the
floor panels then put on the roof and attach with 4 screws. The dog house is
already coated with cedar stain but I decided to put some water seal on mine. I
used the same Olympic Maximum Tinted Waterproofing Sealant that I used on my
fence. You can find it at your local Lowes hardware store. Since the wood is
already stained it is not very absorbent and it took quite awhile to dry. Now
that I have done it, I would say you can probably skip this step!
The price
difference between the original model and the extreme model is only about
$10.00. For the extra money you get an asphalt shingle roof and plastic
feet.
