Munchie's Rescue Story

I'm a very good girl, why did you throw me away? Do you know how scary it is to be captured by strangers and hauled off to a shelter? All those barking dogs and strange people and crowded cages. I was terrified!

Lucky for me the Texas Alaskan Malamute Rescue came along. The shelter they found me at was crowded and my time was up. They were going to kill me. I had heartworms and needed to be spayed. I was a bony 48 lbs. Shelters and pounds can not afford to treat all the sick dogs. Want to get an idea what it is like in some dog pounds? I am a rare Sable Malamute, most Mals you see are black & white or grey and white, and sometimes even red. Many people think I am part german shepherd or wolf, because of my pretty sable color. I was lucky enough to be invited to a Sable Malamute party and had a grand time. Pics can be seen here. Ayla and Boo were there and they are both rescue dogs also. Who in their right mind would toss out a rare Sable Malamute? Some people are soooo stupid!

I have been in my new home since Jan 2003 and am happy to say I am now a spoiled 70 lb house dog. Mom is threating to put me on a diet.

Sadly many of my friends are still sitting in shelters, waiting and hoping that some kind person will adopt them before kill day. Remember, dogs are people too! At least we like to think we are ;)

Now that I am 4 years old mom has decided I can start dating. I have been looking at the petfinder listings trying to find my soul mate. You can see pics from my dates here. It has taken several months but I have finally found my Malaman!

My new mom wanted an older dog because she works and doesn't have time for all that new puppy stuff. Crying at night, house training, general destructiveness and wanting to play all the time. At 2 years old I was always ready to play but was also happy to just lounge around the house. There are many advantages to adopting an older dog.

China is slaughtering cats and dogs and selling the mislabled fur garmets to the USA and Europe. Are you wearing a cat or dog? The Houston City Pound and animal control shelters are only required to keep an animal 3 days. If you have lost your pet you need to check with them every day. You can view lost and adoptable pets online at Petharbor.com. This site has nationwide listings, just enter your zip code to find animal shelters and dog pounds in your area.

Petfinder.org also has nationwide online listings of unwanted pets for adoption. Just enter your zip code, type of animal and breed you are looking for. There are many breed specific rescue groups that have their adoptable dogs online for viewing. You can find a list of some of them at the American Kennel Club.

When you adopt a pet it deserves to have a home for life. Small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs. If you think your circumstances may change and you won't be able to care for a pet for 15 or 20 years maybe you should consider adopting a senior pet. It is very hard for on an older house dog to suddenly find itself living in a shelter. You can get an instant online quote for pet insurance if you are worried about medical bills.

Many breed rescues and local animal shelters are full to capacity and need foster homes. Foster homes allow more animals to be rescued from kill shelters. The animal will stay with it's foster parent until a permanent home can be found. This may be a good option for you if you want an animal but are not ready or able to make a long term commitment at this point. It can also give you a chance to become familiar with different breeds of dogs before you decide which type you want.
